Ben Rivers exhibited at Camden Arts Centre 26 September - 29 November 2015
This image is taken from Rivers' film, There Is A Happy Land Further Awaay (2015), commissioned for his exhibition at Camden Arts Centre. Capturing the spectacular landscapes of the remote volcanic Republic of Vanuatu archipelago, before they were devestated by Cyclone Pam in early 2015, the footage becomes a ghostly document of an ecosystem now irrevocably altered. Filmed on 16 mm and then digitised, island imagery of active volcanoes, underwater WW2 debris, children playing, and wrecked boats transform into intangible digital recollections of the island, made on the opposite side of the world.
Ben Rivers was born in 1972 in Somerset he lives and works in London. He has been the recipient of numerous prizes including: FIPRESCI International Critics Prize, 68th Venice Film Festival for his first feature film Two Years At Sea; Artangel Open 2013; the inaugural Robert Gardner Film Award, 2012; the Baloise Art Prize, Art Basel, 2011; twice shortlisted for the Jarman Award, 2010 and 2012; Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Artists, 2010. Artist-in-focus screenings and retrospectives include Courtisane Festival; Pesaro International Film Festival; London Film Festival; Tirana Film Festival; Punto de Vista Pamplona; and Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. His Artangel Commission, The Two Eyes Are Not Brothers ran until 31 August 2015. His second feature, A Spell to Ward Off The Darkness, was made in collaboration with Ben Russell and premiered at Locarno Film Festival 2013. The feature films are distributed in UK by SODA Pictures and Cinema Guild and KimStim in North America, and he is represented by Kate McGarry Gallery, London.
